By definition, natural skincare is caring for the skin using only naturally-derived ingredients.  As the largest organ of the body, the skin’s health is an important subject.  But, it is one that is often overlooked.

We often neglect our skin’s health.  We use harsh cleansers and shower too often.  We fail to moisturize and forget to wear sun block.  We use perfumes and cosmetics containing allergens, irritants and toxins.

The cosmetic industry helped to change the way that we think about caring for the skin.  Since the 1930’s, the companies have focused more on immediately improving the skin’s appearance.  Caring for the skin’s health was an afterthought, if it was even a thought at all.

Before the cosmetic industry took over, there was only natural skincare.  The tradition began with Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic practitioners thousands of years ago.
With olive oil, honey, tea tree oil, witch hazel and jojoba, they healed people’s skin conditions.  Those things were used for maintaining and protecting the skin’s health, as well.

The foods a person eats can have a positive or negative effect on their appearance.  The amount of time spent in the sun or wind makes a difference.

Swimming in chlorinated pools and showering in chlorinated water damages the skin’s health and appearance.  Ideally, one should take a holistic approach by eating the right foods, taking care to protect against sun damage and avoiding chlorine.

Active individuals, regular swimmers and outdoor enthusiasts can still enjoy themselves and have healthy looking complexions, if they take the proper steps.

For swimmers, it is important to avoid showering in chlorine.  A good showerhead filter takes care of that.  Once the chlorine is rinsed away, it is important to use a good all natural skincare moisturizer.

For the body, jojoba and olive oils are good choices.  A body lotion containing both those oils is an excellent choice.  They work together to protect and repair.

A good facial moisturizer is one that contains grape seed oil.  An excellent choice is one that contains grape seed oil and the antioxidant coenzyme Q10, especially for anyone that spends time in the sun.  The skin’s natural coenzyme Q10 levels are quickly depleted during sun exposure. The sun contributes to an aged appearance, because it leads to free radical damage.  Coenzyme Q10 prevents and repairs free radical damage.  But, when the skin’s coenzyme Q10 content is depleted, lots of damage occurs.

The regular use of a natural skincare mask containing clay extracts is beneficial for all skin types.  The extracts gently pull dirt and other toxins out of the pores, making it unnecessary to use harsh cleansers or scrubs.  The clay masks help to heal existing blemishes and prevent new ones from forming.

There are many beneficial products for improving and protecting the skin’s health.  You just need to be careful to do your due diligence.
